Right from the beginning you can feel the tension being created, a Baldacci trademark for sure. I grew up in a predominantly middle class white city in upstate NY, right along side many middle class black families. We saw racism, we saw hate, but not as bad as it was still in the south. I sort of remember News reports through the 70s of the race riots and the rally’s. I vaguely remember George Wallace being shot, or at least learning about it. I remember our small city being divided by race and by ignorance and race. I remember racism in my only family as my parents were from the WWII generation and never knew anything different it wasn’t a hate filled racism it was a peaceful innocent racism if there is such a thing. Baldacci captures all this and more with another great novel. Once you start this book be ready for your own self examination and be ready to shock yourself. This novel, even though is historical in its story it can still give hope today for a better country and a better future to someday when our country, our whole country will be colorless and racism will finally disappear even if it’s one person at a time!

Once again Mr. Baldaci hits a home run with this novel. The story is a tight yarn that really hits home in today’s societal upheavals. He is able to show the reader what it was like in the late 60’s in a country divided by race in the aftermath of the assassinations of MLK and RFK. To a certain extent it is a story of the coming of age of a white lawyer faced with defending a Black couple accused of a hienious crime and learning how to defend a capital crime by an excellent black female attorney. It is well worth the read.

How does Baldacci weave and tell a story that’s 55 years old yet seems fresh as if it happened last year? And we have personal tragedy and triumph as well as a morality play all wrapped up in a compelling story. It took me a while to get my engine going, but once I did I couldn’t stop reading … and a was waiting for the next shoe to drop.In short, I loved this read and I expect there is more to come with Jack and Desiree.I’ve been reading his novels since The Camel Club in 2005. I’m looking forward to the next installment of The 6:20 Man – and anything else he publishes.

I have been a David Baldacci from the get go and this book reminded me why I enjoy his books so much! As a former court clerk I always enjoy the legal parts of his books but this one is even more special. set in the 1960’s South this is a story of racial and gender inequality during a time when the KKK still ruled in large areas south of the Mason -Dixon line. What makes it so moving is that I am old enough to recall some of the events; Dr. King, Bobby Kennedy, the KKK, John Birchers and George Wallace. I hated the violence then and I hate it now. some things have changed and some have not. This was an emotional walk down memory lane – the marches I attended and the fierce feelings that injustices bring to mind.We simply must do better. Thank you for writing this book David Baldacci – it’s a great one!

David Baldacci never disappoints. I teach history and this book is historically accurate and tears you apart. This is not for the feint of heart, nor is it for anyone unwilling to change any beliefs they still have that this country once had (and sadly still has). This book was a page turner from the beginning and Baldacci’s writing kept you suspended on the rights and wrongs of history. Even though it is not a true story, all the elements of the truth in the Jim Crow south are there. Well done!!!

This book is set in 1968, a year I remember well; but the atmosphere and the animosity of the time faded. Sad to say, we have not moved far enough forward in all these years.The story is fascinating and the characters multidimensional. The legal efforts limited as the era preceded all the advantages we have today. The events that make the story are hard to read about, as are the living conditions of some of the characters; but the heroics are uplifting.

I love all things David Baldacci, and this does not disappoint! An amazing story and wonderfully written, this is my favorite story to date; if I could give this 100 stars I would!!! The story takes place in the 1960’s civil rights era; where whites and colored everything is divided. A black man Jerome Washington is accused of killing his white employers, and needs a lawyer. Jack Lee a white lawyer decides to take Jerome’s case; everyone and everything is trying to persuade him otherwise!! Desiree DuBose is a female black lawyer from Chicago; whose wants to help Jack get justice for Jerome. Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Mr. Baldacci!!!

At this time in our country’s history it is important to remember the past and why we can never stop fighting for the United States we all deserve. This book is beautifully written and expresses truths none of us should forget. Compelling story with strong characters. This book is definitely worth your time.
