This book got delivered to my Kindle at 9pm (pacific time) when it was released. Big mistake. I thought I’d read the first chapter to see what the fuss was about—and next thing I knew, it was 2am and I was still reading, eyes on stalks. I’m a woman of a certain age and I feel like Miranda July scooped out my insides with a spoon and served them back to me. This book is extraordinary. Saucy, funny, sad, and hopeful. Insightful about motherhood, marriage, and what it feels like to be facing down menopause. And very genuine about sex, in all its guises, in all sorts of bodies. I never write reviews on Amazon, but this book messed me up overnight in a good way. Now I’ve finished it, I’m going to read it again, only slowly.

I don’t think I have ever written an Amazon book review – and I am a voracious reader- but I adore this book so much that I bought a copy for all of my friends that I thought would appreciate it! Miranda July will blow your mind. It was so unexpected- so uplifting – and so wild. Especially if you are an artist, perimenopausal – and just wanting to escape your life – READ IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thirst quenching. I couldn’t put it down. I love the way she writes and the way her mind works. Read it!

FreshFunnyRealAwakeInspiringAnd for some reason the site is demanding 8 more words- which makes me want to get on all fours and from that stable position- kick Amazon.

July brought past feelings alive. Phases of emotional life are what it is to be alive… If we can only remember to remember them.

Best work of fiction I have read in over a decade… Moved me,made me laugh out loud and cry in public. Miranda July is a national treasure( like someone else wrote on the flap) Her mind, none like it. Literary+ extraordinary. English majors will float for weeks. Skill, this is’ so pretty, turn of phrase masterful.

A mental buffet on marriage, aging, menopause, autonomy, authenticity and self. Revelatory, funny, startlingly honest. It’s not just the sex (although it very much IS the sex). My initial concern that the protagonist (author?) didn’t seem to understand construction profit margins dissipated (jk); what she does understand is far more important. This book is like a smile from a stranger who sees you and…gets it.
FROM TEXAS, NOT CRAZY –
Miranda July is something I thought I’d never meet again: She’s an honest woman. As a woman in the twilight of middle age, I felt every word of this book. I loved the main character. Deeply flawed? Yup, just like the rest of us. And the comments section highlights why we need Miranda so bad – people are ridiculous about sex. Sex is life, it’s the force that through the green fuse drives the flower. Women bring life. Women like sex. That scares people. Too bad. Buy this book. Love this book. It’s about sex. It’s about life.

This book was so odd. The main character was not likeable, but I could not put it down. The story so unique that I was compelled to keep reading. It is nice to see a main character that discusses menopause.
