A little different than Arduino Nano, but similar enough

I had a little trouble getting my computer to upload at first, I ended up flipping the DIP switch next to CH343 and that allowed me to connect. Also, the onboard LED’s are 10 and 11, not LED_BUILTIN.I”m sure there’s so much more and I look forward to using some of those features that the Nano doesn’t have.

    Terrific ESP32 value

Each ESP32S3 has 16MB flash storage, 240MHz dual-core processor, Bluetooth/wifi communications, USB-C connector and meets my expectations. After soldering two pin headers (32 total pins), I used it successfully upon a breadboard. There is a tiny slide switch built-in that selects how the USB-C connection is used; the switch ON position is for JTAG debug and the default position is for a serial interface via the CH343P chip (e.g. microPython console, Arduino IDE, COM port). Online documentation and tutorials are very good and abundant. I’m happy with this product and recommend it.

    Excellent dev boards!

These boards are really quite nice. They are well made and great quality. The documentation seems to be second-to-none in this sector. They are small and can do so many things for the DIY maker. There isn’t really much to say for those that know anything about these types of boards, but that this product is definitely a step above many others out there!

These are great for custom RGB LED signs

These little development boards are one of the best around for custom RGB LED signage/displays. They are recognized by xLights which allows you to program the LED routines without any actual programing knowledge. They have built in WiFi and Bluetooth. xLights is free, but you can also program them in the Arduino environment if that’s more your jam. Powerful, but not power hungry. These come with headers which makes soldering easier.

Excellent, fast development board for your IOT projects, no FCC cert

I love these little boards for prototyping various projects. They have WiFi (2.4ghz), bluetooth and a camera connector. They’re fantastic little devices. You can program them in the Arduino environment, too!The only potential downsides:1) Not marked with FCC logo so probably doesn’t have FCC certification – making legality questionable2) Headers are not pre-soldered, so they take a little work to get operational. These are great little devices. Highly recommended.

    Nothing bad to say

Any issues I have with this product come from me not understanding the project I’m working on. In this case the S3 board was wrong. The board works out of the package though as expected and even features a USB-C port instead of the mini usb, which is nice.

Good quality ESP32 board with usb-c

Ive used several ESP32 dev boards in the past but this one is nice because it integrates the camera interface and uses usb-c. These boards quickly connected to the arduino IDE and I had some simple sketches running in no time. I did not have a camera to try but I will update this review when I get one. The gpio pins work as expected and everything loads very fast compared to other slower boards.

    Flagship ESP32 S3 Dev Board!

This is a great Dev board for the ESP32-S3, which is the flagship ESP32 chip from Espressif. It comes from the factory pre-loaded with some code, and if you set your serial monitor to 921600 baud, you can read the default message with the website link for sample codes and installation instructions. The website will need to be translated (automatically by your browser) into English, but it gives the necessary info to get this board running, describes the pin-outs, pins to avoid (GP19/20), etc. It is also very clear that you must download the CH343 driver to connect/program via USB-C port. There is a link on the website, which I followed and installed. As long as you do this, you can easily opearate this board from the Arduino IDE (v2.2.1). I just selected “ESP32S3 Dev Module” from the Espressif ESP 32 library, and I was able to program the onboard LEDs easily to verify operation and programmability. The onboard LEDs on this board are GPIO 10 and 11. The one thing I couldn’t find was much information or sample code about the camera port, which is a DVP 8-16 bit camera interface. I’m sure this info must be out there, I just haven’t found it yet.Sometimes ESP32’s can be difficult with Arduino IDE, but this one was a breeze. This is a highly capable board, and the S3 is currently the “flagship” chip from Espressif. This dev board gets 5 stars from me, because it was very easy to get up and running.

    These pass the sniff test

I won’t claim to be an expert on ESP32 boards, there’s plenty that I’m still working on learning about IoT programming and most of the things I’ve done with Arduino IDE is rooted in tutorials and a couple of C++ courses I took in college, but these pass the quick sniff tests I ran on these boards. The manual isn’t the cleanest, or most complete, certainly nothing compared to the documentation Adafruit puts out for other various boards, but you get enough to get it working with the big notes being:1) Make sure to install drivers for the CH343P interface2) Install Arduino IDE with the ESP32 board manager from Espressif Systems3) Set the board to “ESP32S3 Dev Module” for programmingI was able to run some quick tests with my own code and the ESP32 -> Time -> SimpleTime example to make sure the boards could connect to my local wifi network. All my quick tests worked fine, with no hangups in terms of programming any of the boards I received. While it would be nice if it was compatible with some of the breakout boards I’ve got, the pin identification on the back is pretty easy to read. There is also a URL for documentation but the screenprinting is a little rough and it goes to a Luatos wiki page in Chinese. Google Chrome does a workable English translation. That said, there is a QR code for the manual in the plastic box, as well as available to download from the product page here on Amazon. So overall, these boards seem perfectly workable if you have some existing knowledge of Arduinos and ESP32 chips, or if you find a tutorial that calls for these boards or direct equivalent but is probably not the best option for newer dabblers

Great documentation, so many potential applications.

I always say that documentation is part of any product. In today’s culture of nearly no documentation on anything, I feel like I need to give a particular “thank you” to the manufacturer for actually putting the time into making this product extremely usable by including very solid documentation- at least on the Arduino front, which is how I intend on using these. Some of the documentation for other methods of use (LuatOS, for example which I know nothing about) are in Chinese which I personally can’t read, so I can’t speak for that. For Arduino IDE, there is an instruction PDF which is linked to in the listing, but also the box came with a QR code which links to the PDF as well. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND grabbing copies of all documentation that you can and keep local copies! Again I greatly appreciate making sure the documentation is well-made, and highly accessible. That PDF then links to other documentation and explains the process of getting the board definition into Arduino IDE. This is considered a “dev” board so make sure to use the “dev” json file. While the documentation doesn’t go into extreme detail on the ESP32 specifically, it gives a ton of information on this particular board’s implementation, and even includes a full schematic, which is accessible even before you order so you can make sure this is the right board for your application. If there was any documentation I would have liked to see more information about, it would be the camera and/or LCD connector as I’m not highly familiar with it.I am intending on using these to monitor my air compressor’s usage and make an auto-purge, and monitor temperatures in a few areas using a HTTP API hosted on the board. I have already been able to get my boards hosting web pages which interface with the hardware, which is my starting point.A couple features in particular that I like:- I need mine to work in cold, and so I tested this down to -20C. The wifi, serial, and CPU all work flawlessly.- There is a switch on the board to select between USB Serial or direct into the ESP32’s USB. Very handy!- ESP32 easily hosts a web server to act as an interface or as an API access to the hardware. If you’re looking to do this, do a search for “esp32 arduino web page host” for an example on how to do this. Likewise there are also examples on how to query an external API, search for “esp32 arduino get web page”.-Boards have no components on the back which means they can be soldered directly to another PCB without the headers. Headers are included if preferred. Some things I potentially like but haven’t had the need for yet:- Includes an on-board flash chip which I don’t currently have a need for and haven’t tested (at any temperature). I’ll update if I ever do test it, which may be sooner rather than later if I have to store HTML code in the flash chip. But I may just use an external MicroSD which could be a lot easier.- The connector mates with my E-Ink display, and the pinout at least from memory looks like it may be compatible. If I ever have enough need to justify the time to dig into that, I’ll update. But the schematic is available to check out.Things to know (neither pro nor con):- I originally thought these were Arduino Nano form factor, but they are not. Nor are they RPi Pico. As far as I know, they’re their own footprint. They have the same width as a Pico, but pinout is not the same and they have 8 fewer pins.- Power consumption is marginally better than a RPi Zero W, drawing about 70ma compared to the 90ma or so from the RPi Zero W running at idle (running DietPi OS). Of course they’ll both go up from there depending on what you’re doing. Unlike the RPi, this has a ton more options on the GPIO, lots of ADCs in particular being one that the RPi is missing.- While the board takes 5V from the USB port to power itself, the ESP32 and GPIO are 3v3.- Listing says 8MB PSRAM, but like in the photos in the listing, the chip isn’t populated. Almost a con, I hope the listing gets updated.
