  1. Jill Nicely –

In New York City, there are some industries that close down on Friday afternoons. The executives take that time time to head to their houses in the Hamptons, and those who can’t afford a summer house just get the afternoon off to enjoy. Sawyer is new to the city, working as an editorial assistant while her fiancé Charles is working in a law office. Charles has to work long hours in order to move up in the firm, but Sawyer’s office closes down on Fridays, leaving her at loose ends. She doesn’t really have any work friends, and her best friend from college is teaching in Asia for a while.Sawyer finds a quiet park where she can eat her lunch while reading manuscripts. She loves editing and wants to move up in the company, but her evenings are long, and those Friday afternoons are even longer. At a work function for Charles’s law firm, Sawyer meets another couple. Kendra also works long hours at the firm, but her boyfriend Nick works at an ad agency, so he gets those long Friday afternoons off too. After an awkward first meeting, Sawyer and Nick start chatting through emails and then dialup AOL messaging. Sawyer mentions she’s interested in doing some touristy things for her Friday afternoons. Nick, a lifelong New Yorker, is resistant, but then he decides to help Sawyer learn how to enjoy the city like a native.During their Friday afternoons and hot dogs and drinks, Sawyer finds that she finally has a friend to talk to about her issues with her job and how she’s started writing some poetry and short stories again. Nick shares stories of growing up in the city as the son of immigrants and talks about his music. Sometimes they talk about how they think Charles and Kendra may be having an affair, and sometimes they just enjoy the day.But as the days heat up and those Friday afternoons melt into long evenings, Sawyer starts to wonder if it really is Charles who is having the affair, or if it’s her?Summer Fridays is a gentle romance that’s also about finding yourself, figuring out what you want, and learning to use your voice. Sawyer is a strong voice in this story, going from a young college graduate to a confident woman making her own decisions in her relationships and in her work. With charming scenes that bring to mind You’ve Got Mail and a special kind of luck, this story is a reminder of what’s most important in life.I loved Summer Fridays. Although I don’t work at a place that offers Friday afternoons off in the summer (so aspirational though!), I can imagine the freedom that it would bring. I can feel the heat of the city, taste those hot dogs (mustard only for me), and remember the possibility of that time of life. The more time I spent with Sawyer and Nick, the more I liked them as individuals, and the more I was rooting for them to find each other in the end. This novel has all the ingredients for a lovely summer romance, and they all come together like a refreshing Sea Breeze.Egalleys for Summer Fridays were provided by Dutton through NetGalley, with many thanks.

  2. MountainDreamz –

Such a fun summer read. I couldn’t put it down.

  3. G.I. –

I love this book so much! The love story. the characters, the dialogue—it’s one of the best romantic comedies that I’ve read in a while! I highly recommend!

  4. Mac-Z Zurawski –

This story harkens to the days where companionship created love. No interruptions by technology or social media. When you got to know someone without checking a profile. It’s a mesmerizing book that had me infatuated with it’s sincere characters. It has left me longing for those bygone days. A sweet reprise.

  5. Liana Carissa –

This might be my favorite read of 2024 thus far. The setting: NYC. The year: 1999. This book was a film in my mind. I could perfectly envision every scene and every backdrop. It was beautifully written and kept me laughing. The ending made me cry. If you like classic 90s romcoms like When Harry Met Sally or You’ve Got Mail, this book will be just for you.Thank you to the woman I met in my gym sauna who told me about this book. It brought me out of my reading slump. 🥹

  6. Amazon Customer –

This was such a pleasant surprise! I was not expecting to love this as much as I did. The writing is beautiful and these characters felt very very very real. I think the tropes are tough to pull off and Rindell does it beautifully and realistically

  7. Debi –

I thought Nick and Sawyer were believable. Loved their growth and development. Loved Suzanne’s lyrical writing and loved this story.

Summer Fridays ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5.New York in the late 90s. AOL Instant Messenger. The FMC is compared to Audrey Hepburn. Say less, fam.*TW: cheatingSawyer and Charles: Now virtual strangers thanks to his unreasonable late nights at the office. Sawyer accompanies him to a work dinner and realizes that there could be something else keeping him at work late: Kendra. While Kendra and Charles are flirting like little schoolchildren, Sawyer tries and fails to make small talk with Kendra’s boyfriend, Nick. Shortly after, Nick tracks Sawyer down online to apologize for being rude and pretentious, which ultimately leads to a string of AIM exchanges and summer Fridays spent together. *Side note, when the south said, “we will rise again”, couldn’t that have included adopting summer Fridays instead of racism? Anyway…As the summer progresses, Sawyer begins to contemplate what she really wants in life. Should she lean into her feelings for Nick? Or should she go through with marrying Charles, whose parents are footing the absurd wedding bill? While I don’t support cheating, I was rooting for Sawyer. She’s in her early 20s, trying to climb the ladder at work, and has so much to offer, yet she spends her nights waiting for her shady fiancé to come home. As Nick would say, she’s too nice, worrying about upsetting Charles’s parents and the repercussions of a failed engagement instead of doing what’s best for her. I was happy to see moments of courage throughout the story. It’s clear that this is the author’s love letter to New York. I could easily imagine myself participating in Sawyer’s summer bucket list. The author did a fantastic job with details! Now, go live vicariously through Sawyer by indulging in a Sea Breeze cocktail during this heat wave (swipe for recipe).

  9. Kenny –

The nostalgia evoked by the AOL era permeates this exceptional novel. It transported me back to a time in my life when I would spend late nights engaging in instant messaging conversations with my first crush. The familiar sound of the door opening and the ping of a new message appearing still resonate with me. “Summer Friday” reignited the youthful emotions within me as we journeyed through the pages following the life of an editorial assistant named Sawyer in her twenties in New York City. The novel is filled with love, desire, excitement, and heartbreak. What I found most captivating were the references to “hidden” locations in New York that someone unfamiliar with the city (like myself) would not be aware of. I am now inspired to book a flight to NYC and experience Sawyer and Nick’s adventures every Summer Friday. I highly recommend adding this novel to your Must-Read list!

  10. Laurel-Rain Snow –

You’ve Got Mail for a new generation, set in the days of AOL and instant messenger banter, about a freshly engaged editorial assistant who winds up spending her “summer Fridays” with the person she least expects.Summer 1999: Twentysomething Sawyer is striving to make it in New York. Between her assistant job in publishing, her secret dreams of becoming a writer, and her upcoming wedding to her college boyfriend, her plate is full. Only one problem: She is facing an incredibly lonely summer as her fiancé has been spending longer and longer hours at work . . . with an all-too-close female colleague, Kendra. When Kendra’s boyfriend, Nick, invites Sawyer to meet up and compare notes about their suspicions, the meeting goes awry. She finds Nick cocky and cynical, and he finds her stuck in her own head. But then Nick seeks out Sawyer online to apologize, and a friendship develops.Soon, Sawyer’s lonely summer takes an unexpected turn. She and Nick begin an unofficial ritual—exploring New York City together every summer Friday. From hot dogs on the Staten Island Ferry and Sea Breezes in a muggy East Village bar to swimming at Coney Island, Sawyer feels seen by Nick in a way that surprises her. He pushes her to be braver. To ask for what she wants. Meanwhile, Sawyer draws Nick out of his hard shell, revealing a surprisingly vulnerable side. They both begin living for their Friday afternoons together. But what happens when the summer is over?Summer Fridays is a witty and emotional love letter to New York City that also captures the feeling of being young and starting out, uncertain what to do on your summer Friday. It’s also perfect for readers who remember when “going online” meant tying up the phone line, and the timeless thrill of seeing a certain someone’s name in your inbox. My Thoughts:As I journeyed through Summer Fridays, I was captivated by the Manhattan days and nights and weekends for two young people falling in love, especially since we don’t know how their love will play out when events turn unexpected.I loved watching Nick and Sawyer as they try to make their love come to fruition, and how two years after their first summer together they finally come together again. A beautiful tale of love in Manhattan takes us to delight and joy. 5 stars.***
