Reading Then There Was Larry felt like stepping into a friend’s life – their most intimate, private thoughts, hopes and fears, humor and doubts. The author’s obvious love of language shines through as she takes the reader through a relationship with a man who seems boring, but harbors dark secrets. Some books are fun reads. Others have depth. This is one of those rare books that is both a joy to read and evokes thoughts and feelings about one’s own life.

Single mom Marie reads the morning paper as she does every day when a headline makes her blood run cold. Her boring ‘ol ex-boyfriend Larry is arrested on charges of unspeakable crimes of a sexual predator. Larry? Her milkatose handyman ex? How did she not see the signs? As she reflects on her relationship with Larry, alarming questions pop into her head. Midlife dating seems innocent enough to Marie… but then there was Larry. Then There Was Larry is an eye-opening cautionary tale for women everywhere. Marie Estorge’s story is not an unusual one when it comes to sexual predators as there are thousands who are victimized each year. Marie Estorge shares her story with self-effacing humor and stark honesty. I connected with Marie, nodding my head in agreement the further I delved into this memoir. Then There Was Larry moves at a nice easy pace with natural ebbs and flows. This memoir is an example of how deviants infiltrate our society, earning our trust. Then There Was Larry blends true crime and the pitfalls of dating. You’ll be so taken in by Marie’s story, you won’t be able to stop reading. Every woman needs to read Then There Was Larry so she will not make the same mistakes as Marie Estorge. Highly recommend!Disclaimer: I read this on Kindle Unlimited. My Rating: 5 stars

Reading this really made me think about some of my past and current relationships. Why do we choose certain friends? Are we vulnerable, needy, or choose to ignore red flags. Very well written and inciteful.

Although this is on what many consider a “woman’s topic” and so it unlikely to be considered a masterpiece, I disagree. This book is so well written. I was an English major so I did read the “canon” of literary masterpieces, and this book fits well within the genre, IMHO.

The author captured my mind and heart as I read this captivating story. The story unearthed entire background about someone she had dated. Her insights were compelling because her writing style is very specific and descriptive. She expresses and gives words to a full range of emotions. Her insights consistently invited me to ask – Do I ask enough questions and do I betray my instincts? A fantastic read.
